I'm looking for a dark grey or black surround that is not shiny granite. I can't use brick. I saw some slate but it was too light in color for me. Any suggestions?

You can use ceramic tile. There are alot of colors to choose from, and different sizes. I just installed a direct vent gas log fireplace, and we selected 12"x12" tile and I will glue it onto the drywall with liquid nail, being carefull not to get it on the firebox. You have the option of overlapping the tile onto the firebox, to hide those unsightly cracks. And then I am installing a wooden mantel surround. You can buy the surrounds unpainted, so you can paint them to your own liking. To find the tile, go to your local flooring or lumber yard. And to find the surround, go to the local fireplace store, or do a search on the internet for Fireplace surrounds. There is a good selection online. I have selected a fireplace mantel surround from a Hand Craftsman in Willard, Kansas.
