View Full Version : non-wood fireplace

pennstar asked this question on 7/14/2001:
I was recently found out that I could not install a full wood fireplace surround on my existing zero-clearance fireplace since the code requires that the inside edge of the legs/shelf portions must be no less than 12" from the outside edge of my existing fire box. Unfortunately, I only have 11-1/2" of wall between the left side of the edge of the fire box and a doorway, which would mean the left leg would start somewhere in nonexistent space. There is presently 8" tile that surrounds the box which I have already painted with ceramic paint in preparation for the full mantel I thought I would be able to purchase, however I would be willing to repaint it if necessary. I have done extensive decorative painting in my home in the "country cottage" style, and would like the fireplace to keep the same theme.

Is there a source for reasonably cost alternative material (other than wood or other flammable material)? What would that alternative material be? Where would I find the alternative material or sources for nonflammable pre-fab fireplace surrounds?

Thanks.

Hello
Do you have Glass doors on you fire place? if so this changes the place where you measure from could help.
Are you going to have book cases on both sides of the box? if so you can add tile, coriaon, and could faux paint it to match the book shelves....Good Luck...
