I just purchased a new home and the entire house has knock-down textured walls. I would like to paper/wainscoat some of the walls and need a smooth surface. What is the best way to proceed?

Hi bones52,you can try sanding, but that will take forever.I would put a skim coat of joint compound over the walls your going to paper, and when that drys just do a light sanding.
