I am putting in a replacement Anderson window. My question is should a bead of sealant be run around the inside of the nailing fin? The instructions make no mention of it.Also the old window had the nailing fin nailed to the outside of the siding(t-111) and had trim on top of it around the window. This is the way i am planning on installing the new one. Will this be a problem if i want new siding in the future?

Hi ochris1,you diffenitly want to put a bead of silicone caulk around the inside of the nailing flange.I dont know why your old window was nail to the outside of the T111.Your suppose to nail the flange to the rough framing of the window opening, then install your T111 or siding. If thats the way all your windows are put in,i say install your new window the same way.Is the trim your talking about around the window 1x4 cedar or something like that?I've seen a lot of new homes being built where there installing the windows and then putting 1x4 cedar around the nailing flange, then running the siding up to the cedar. It makes it alot easier to replace your windows when you want new ones. You just remove the 1x4's to expose the nailing flange, and put in a new window. You dont have to worry about removing the siding.
Good luck

Yes it has 1 x 4 trim around the window. It sure is easier to change the window,im just wondering about the siding because i want to replace that next year.I guess you could cut around the window and leave the old siding underneath the fins and but the new stuff up to it.Thanks

Your welcome, and yes you can have new siding put right over the T111.

The Andersen installation instructions are not clear on the issue of the "fins". The instructions tell you to remove the installation flange for "Replacement installations where exterior finish (siding, brick veneer, stucco) is already applied". This is quoted from the section "Prepare for Installation (Replacement and Masonry/Brick Veneer Installations Only)"...?? I spoke to the Andersen Company about this. (VERY nice people and very helpful). They told me that you should use the "Side Jamb Clips by Andersen" if you NEED to remove the installation flange when replacing a window. In my case I found that I only needed to remove the bottom flange.
