I am in the process of planning to build a new home. Although I am having a builder do the work, there are options I have and my question refers to windows choices. I am seeing a large difference in price between wood and vinyl windows. In talking with the builder, he stated that if I go with vinyl intead of wood it will almost pay for the central a/c that I would like. My father is opposed to anything other than wood, but have recent technology advancements made vinyl an acceptable choice to wood? Do the fog as much as they used to in older homes? Thanks

Of course this is your choice, and you will get 50 different answers asking 50 different people. But having built many many homes, I would only recommand vinyl. They are double insulated, Low E, never need painting, easy to clean, and they tip out, no fog,. Wood windows are good also. They need staining or painting periodically, they cost more, and are insulated also. In vinyl use Crestline or Marvin. Good companies. Since you are paying for your house, you choose the windows and keep cool with your AC.

Vinyl windows have been improved dramtically in the past 10 or 15 years. The ones I install (Amerimax) now have a lifetime warranty on everything -- the frame, the vinyl, workmanship, and even the seal of the glass. They are covered for as long as you own the house they are installed in, and the warranty can be transferred one time to the next owner. The mfgr. couldn't back them like that if warranty problems were an everyday occurrence -- it would bankrupt them!
Low-E glass is a must. It reduces both heat and UV ray transmission through the glass. In the summer, your AC works less due to less heat gain, and in the winter, your heater works less due to less heat loss. And with fewer UV rays coming through, things like your carpet and furniture will last longer.
Wood windows are going to be more expensive than vinyls, and will require periodic maintenance, like painting or staining.
