View Full Version : Changing blade on Push Mower

I am struggling with trying to change the blade on my Craftsman push mower. Cannot get the bolt off and have used a lubricant along with using my full body weight on the thing and still nothing.

Suggestions (short of to get someone stronger to help...), please.

Thanks.

faith99,
With the mower turned upside down, wedge a lenth of 2x4 between the blade and the housing. With the correct size wrench or socket you may need to strike the wrench with a hammer for leverage. Wear gloves and try not to scrape your knuckles. One other thing, the safety manual will advise to disconnect the spark plug. Also, don't kill any grass with some spilld gas.

Hello faith99

Fewalt has about the correct method. However, I do not suggest you literally turn the mower upside down. Not a good idea for a vertical shaft engine used on power mowers.

Better method would be to tilt the machine over onto one side and lean the handle against a wall, fence or building. Then insert the wood into the grass shoot and move the blade into contact with it.

The nut holding the blade on would require a socket and a breaker bar. I suggest using a one inch drive breaker bar of 18 inches in lenght and a one inch drive socket with the correct nut size.

Besure your turning in the correct direction, {Counterclock wise} and apply fully body pressure using a locked arm. The nut should break free but will need to be turned with the socket till it's almost fully off.

Upon reinstalling, reverse this proceedure and tighten that nut on securely! It was designed to be tightened tight to prevent damage and injury from it flying off!

Oh Yeah! Be sure to install the new blade exactly as the current one is. Cutting edge facing down and into the cut.

And be very, very careful with the new blade, especially when you are tightening the mount bolt. The blade will be sharp - I have a 1" scar on back of right thumb from a slipped wrench while installing a blade about 10 years ago and I've been turning wrenches of one kind or another for 30+ years.
