My gas range is eating ignitors! I have replaced the oven ignitor(flat, creamic base, 7 inches long) twice. In both cases the new ignitor lasts about 3 days, then the heating element breaks. The original ignitor actually still works and is not broken, but does not heat up enough to light the burner. So, is my range chewing these things up, or do I have the wrong replacement part or a bad lot of replacement ignitors, or ????
thanks and regards, Chris

Hi,

This page shows how to test an oven ignitor/glow bar with an amp meter for proper amps draw...

Try not to touch the ceramic end with fingers as the oil from out hands can damage the glow coil part, the ignitor can also be broken by banging them the wrong way.

Now, with that all being said...we have ran into a rash of the long flat ignitors cracking on the end...some last a few days, some last a few months...had to change a few 2-3 times before getting one that stands up. The company that supplies some of our parts says the problem has been cured with the manufacture and keep changing them until we get one that works properly...we haven't seen many crack at all in the last few months :)
Hang in there!! Most ignitors last 3-5 years.

I had a similar problem with my gas oven and you asked what the eventual outcome was. To review, I changed the safety valve at the suggestion of the guy at the parts store. Even though the original was working fine (as far as I could tell), I was at a point that I would try anything. At the same time, I put in a "brand name" ignitor coil instead of the "bargain" model. Whatever it was, it worked. The oven has been working as good as new for a couple of months now and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it continues. My gut feeling is; I just got a bad bunch of ignitors. One thing for sure, I will never go cheap on this item again.

jeff and dale,
thanks for your advice. the valve checked out ok, so I am going to try an expensive OEM whirlpool ignitor. lets see if this works. maybe once again you get what you pay for!
best regards,
Chris
