Has anyone had success transplanting sassafras saplings taken from clay soil? Even the 6" ones are a challenge. I am guessing that after they lose all their leaves would be the best time to attempt it. Is that right? Maybe I just don't have enough patience while trying to dig and remove them?!

Sassafras tends not to be an easy tree to survive transplanting. The best time to transplant is when a tree is dormant. Moving a tree puts great stress on it. You sever about 90% of the root system, making it difficult for transplanted trees to get enough water. They are more susceptible to pests and disease and are less apt to withstand drought, extreme cold, drying winds.
