Hello Woodish and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliance forum.
Soot isn't a good sign. But if this problem wasn't there prior and has started over time, the most likely cause is lint and dust in and around the burner compartment.
Restricted air flow into the venturi air opening, which is on the burner tube closest to the gas valve, will cause the burner to burn too rich causing soot.
This also happens to gas dryers which have about the same setup. The solution is to clean the entire area, clear the venturi air opening and the burner tube and burner head.
Of course the burner shouldn't be on during this cleaning time. Therefore, look for a burner shutoff valve close to the gas valve. If possible, do not turn off the pilot light unless you know how to relight it.
If your local gas utility offers appliance services, call them for a routineclean, service and adjust if needed. Many gas utilities offer this in home service free while others for a small fee. It's worth the price for peace of mind.
Also consider the fact that the burner is also producing carbon monoxides if soot is present. Therefore, the room the frig is in and possibly the entire house has CO to some degree. Not a healthy enviroment. Needs correcting asap.
