I am replacing fallen brick in an old fireplace firebox that was built in the early 30's. Some of the bricks have shifted but are not even close to being loose and are off set. My plan is to replace the fallen brick and the use a boiler castible to cover all the bricks to give it an even yet unique look. My question is will this work an still be a fuctional fireplace. The castible is good upto 6000 deg F

Set patchwork aside. Expansion and contraction haven't been taken into account.
If the firebox is torched the flue and/or damper may be also. The flashing may be shot and it may need a new crown. The chimney could need repointing also. If it's worthwhile have the firebox rebuilt. An easier solution to a unique appearance http://www.fireonice.com/
