HELP!!! I would like to build an "L" shaped breakfast nook in my kitchen. I have never done a project like this before, and though I am an intelligent woman, I really could use some step by step type help. I have looked at every book in the library and tried all the online sights I can find, and I cant find any do-it-yourself plans for this type of project. I need help deciding what type of wood to make this out of, how much wood I need, and some basic step by step type of instructions. Does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciate it!

Sounds like a pretty ambitious project. I HAVE seen something similar to what you describe and I think it was probably in The Family Handyman magazine. It's been ages since I remember the article tho, so probably hard to find. My best suggestion would be to prowl the home improvement section of the local bookstore (a big one like B&N, Books-a-Million, etc), the library, or a major home store (Lowe's, Home Depot) for d-i-y books that could contain something. As for materials, part of the selection decision would depend on how much you're willing to spend. My materials of choice for most projects are hardwood plywoods (oak, birch) and lumber (oak). BUT, these materials will be more expensive than common pine or fir materials. If you're really ambitious you could trial and error what you want in cheap pine and then switch to the better stuff for a finished project. I'll check my magazine collection and see if I can come up with anything more; check back.

Thanks for your help! I did try all the bookstores, and the library. But couldnt find any with the nook in it. What do you think of either pine or birch hardwood - I can afford either I think, it of course depends on how much I need and I have no idea how to figure that out. My neighborhood Home Depot has been less than helpful. I just dont know where to turn next.

Kelcia,

I too am looking for plans to build a breakfast nook. I have scoured the library and net for plans but have had no luck. I have seen some pictures in books and mags that are similar to the style I would like but no plans. The style I want is somewhat similar to cabinet construction. I'm looking to have a booth that will have storage space below the seating. So I am going to draw up some plans and use cabinet construction methods. It will have an internal frame that will be covered with nice hardwood plywood.

But until I commit myself to this, I'm going to make one last pass on the Internet and bookstores. If I come across something, I will be glad to pass it on to you.

If by chance you find plans, I would appreciate you contact me ;-)

You and I are looking for the exact same thing! Yes, please, if you find any plans or if you make up any I would love to see them, and if I find any or anymore info on this project I will write. I did find a book called "Black and Decker's Built in Projects for the Home" It doesnt have a nook in it but it does have a bench and some hardwood finishing tips. It helped a little. If you find anything better please write! Thanks for your help!
