If a clothes dryer is on and the gas supply is shut off, will it damage the hot surface ignitor?

Hello and Welcome GoodKarma to the Do It Yourself Web Site and thanks for posting a question in my Gas Appliance forum.

Will it burnout the glow coil? <Hot Surface Ignitor>
Sure will. The dryer will continue to cycle on the coil then turn it off repeatedly. Which will only shorten the coils normal life expectancy. Also every other part associated with the drying cycle needlessly.

My question is WHY would you want to do that???

To AIR DRY something?
Use the AIR DRY cycle and save the coil.

If this happened once in error, not harm done.

Thanks Tom, that's just the kind of information I was looking for.

The question was posed to me and I don't know that much about gas clothes dryers, having never owned one myself. When I was looking on the web for more information I stumbled on this forum.

The person who asked me about it didn't give me much information either, so unfortunately I don't know why it was being asked. I got the impression that the gas supply had been shut off and now she was experiencing problems with her dryer, and she may have been trying to tie the failure of a glow coil to the lack of gas supply. I can't imagine that someone would try to air dry clothes by shutting off the gas supply since using the air dry option on the control panel seems like the easier method, but I suppose people do silly things sometimes.

Thanks again,
GoodKarma (aka Sue)

Hello Sue

Glad you took the time to reply back with an update. Adds a closing to the topic for others who also read these postings.

Thanks for the kind words too. Glad I was able to help and also happy you found our website. Visit the site often and tell others.

PS:
Often times gas service gets shut off for reasons people are not willing to disclose. <Get the drift> Clothes can be washed in cold water but drying is a totally different matter.
