I am just moving into my first home. New carpet was added by the previous home owners and as a result all the sliding closet doors are about 1/2 inch toolong. How is the easiest way to cut them off. Someone told me to adjust the brackets at the top but the hangers can't be adusted to make the door any higher. I don't have any power tools to cut them off with and will have to go buy whatever i need- so I would like either the cheepest tool nesessary or the most usefull/safest.

thanks for any advise/help.

As a new homeowner, you might want to start purchasing some tools. A circular saw which would be the most useful tool for cutting down the doors would be a great investment. You could always opt to rent one from a hardware store. Post back with the type of door for directions on how to cut them down.

The closet doors that need to be cut off are hollow core. There are two per closet and they hang from at track at the top.

Thanks for the info on the circular saw. do you think if I put masking tape on the area I will cut- that that would help keep it from splintering. Also is it easier to paint a closet door off the tract(flat on the saw horses) or hanging?

Hi Allieb,As stephen s suggested start buying some tools, your going to need them if your going to do it yourself. As far as masking tape to stop the door from splintering,it wont work. You have to score the line your going to cut off with a razor knife. You can put some masking tape on the bottom of the circular saw if you want so as to not put anymarks on the door.Seems like a 1/2" is a lot to cut off the bottom because of new carpet, try taking 3/16"to 1/4" off first,re-install the door and see if anymore has to be removed. As far as painting the door,i always paint the door when its removed,it alot easier.Hope this helps.

beach 51 and StephenS nailed it.
And use a fine-tooth paneling blade to cut off the doors. Always trim and paint doors on saw horses.
Good Luck!
