View Full Version : Air Compressor

I am looking to buy a compressor so that I may winterize my garden sprinkler system in the winter. I will basically be using this compressor once or twice a year.

My questions are:

1) What size compressor tank and motor whould I need?

2) What brand is recommended?

3) Are there any websites that sell refurbished or reconditioned compressors?

Thanks in advance for any advice or comments.

Not sure what the use of this relative to the sprinkler system, but I'm sure I'm missing something here :).

Do a search in this forum for "Compressors". I know I wrote a pretty lenghty post at one time about how to pick 'em and what to look for, relating to air powered tools around the house and shop.

Check your local paper and with neighbors. I got my 4 HP, 18 Gallon Craftsman (which is a DeVilbiss in disguise) for 60 bucks and it's brand new :). My neighbor just told me to "take it, it's in my way and you can use it more than I could". I wasn't even in the market for one, and now I have a full arsenal of air tools.

Helping the fact was that a week after I got the compressor, I found a 300 dollar Snap On air rachet lying under the snow in the street :). It needed 40 cents in O rings and a good cleaning to get it going again :).

Thanks.

Will do the search as suggested.

I need the compressor to blow out the water from all of the pipes thus the question about the size of the tank and the motor capacity

even though this is a DIY forum. Im going to say save your money and hire someone toblow it out for you. Irrigation system guys usually rent a large compressor for a couple of days and charge you like 50 bucks to blow the system out.

a portable air compressor will do a horrible job of blowing the system out. If all you want the compressor for is once or twice a year, dont bother, just pay the guy and save your money.

If you have to rent this time, just make sure it can fill a 40 gallon tank to 100psi. It’s works best if you buy a rubber disk and cut a hole in the center to pass the house through. And if you are unable to isolate sections of it you are probably not going to have the best results any way. Toward the end of the summer install drain a valve at the lowest point in your system and don’t worry about it ever again.
