Our house has pretty decent all-around insulation for a Depression-era special. Cellulite blown in the walls, Attic the equivalent of R-25(a big improvement over the R-10 of a few years ago!), and vinyl siding, TyVek, and vinyl tilt windows. We also have a whole-house fan in an attic window.
For as long as I can remember, during the hot months of July and August, Dad had us open all the windows late evening and into the night, and close them all up at the crack of dawn. This kept the house relatively cool, even with the drafty crummy wooden windows, storms, and minimal attic isulation, and we only had to run the AC a few hours a day. New windows and more insulation would no doubt enhance the effect of keeping the house cooler, but...
Over the last two years, he suddenly stopped doing it. Instead, he shuts the windows at night(70F 60%humidity)"I don't want all that damn cold air in the house!!", and opens up every window and door during the day(95F, 90%humidity). This causes the whole-house fan to run longer and work harder, and no doubt send our AC electric billt through the damn roof!
I argued that it was HIS IDEA to close up the house early in the day, why did he stop doing it? But his response is don't like it, move out!!
What is WRONG with him? Why does he want all that hot humid air in the house?
