Can anyone tell me some more about using a picture rail to hang pictures in a room. I am interested in the standard distance from the ceiling that such a rail would be mounted as well as where to get such a molding. Is it specifically for that purpose or is another standard type of molding adapted for this use. Thanks.

dave,
I'm not an historical home contractor (or any other type of contractor for that matter), but I have seen a number of older homes with picture rail.
The picture rail was/is used to keep from damaging plaster walls.
It appears to depend upon the heighth of the ceiling (I've seen 9'-13' ceilings here), but most picture rails seems to be installed about 12"-18" down from the ceiling, with the pictures suspended by two long wires to the desired height.
I would think that any decorative chair-rail type molding will work for this application. (At least that's what it looks like to me.)
Good Luck!
