View Full Version : Brown water

My hot water is discolored, which is most noticeable when I run a bath for the kids. At night the water is orange/brown tinted, or sometimes just a bit greenish. If we have been gone for a few days it gets really bad. I have also noticed that some of the white clothes are getting a little bit of a orange tint. The water heater is 9 years old.

Can you tell me what might be wrong, how I could fix it, or what kind of person I should call to fix it?

Hello and Welcome Kjersten to the Do It Yourself Web Site and thanks for posting a question in my Gas Appliance forum.

EXCELLENT Question!

You could try flushing the water heater. However, this may not be anymore then a temporary remedy. A lot depends on the age of the hot water tank {I assume it's a tank type} and the type of pipe plumbing is in the house.

Basically, you should FLUSH the tank. Flushing is totally different then DRAINING. The archives within this forum and that of the plumbing forum have the information for tank flushing.

If the house has copper water lines, the tank flushing should work well if the tank isn't rusting internally. If it is, the only real cure is to replace the tank.

If the house has galvanized iron or steel pipes, those are rusting interanlly and the only permanate solution is to re-pipe the entire house with copper pipes.
