View Full Version : Remove Chaulk off of Brick

Hello my fellow do it yourselfer's. I'm removing some wood entrance trim from my front exterior door (the trim is starting to rot). Anyhow, I thought I might use a sand blaster to remove the chaulking but I'm afraid that might leave noticeable scars on the brick. Has anyone ever tried this? Is there a good method for removing chaulk from brick?

Thanks Much,
Bob

Sandblasting would probably remove more brick than caulking. What kind of caulking are you dealing with? Latex? Silicon? Something else?

You might try either laquer thinner or acetone on it and see if that will do anything for you. And when you replace the wood trim, you might use trim that is thicker than what is presently there to cover the old caulking lines.

lefty,
Thanks for your insight. I don't know what kind of chaulking was used, it was already there when I bought the house. I'll prepare for using one of the suggested removers and also see if they make entrance trim wide enough to cover the area. That's a good idea.
Last thought: Do you think a power washer would do the job?

A power washer might work. Depends on how good of a caulking was used around the trim. Guess there is only one way to find out! Just be careful not to blast the bricks apart. That would be my concern about trying a power washer.

lefty,
Your right, I'll just have to give it a go to find out what exactly will work for my situation. You've given me some good advice on what to try and what not to, so thank you very much.

BTW: I'll let you know what worked when I'm done.

Thanks,
Bob
