View Full Version : garage door springs

I have successfully connected two replacement garage door extension springs to the bracket hangers and moveable pulleys. The door now stays open, so I am fairly confident I got the right springs for the weight of the door.

It's manually operated, single-bay door, no torsion springs. The old springs broke at the point they were attached to the clevis hook on the pulleys. I think the weight of the pulleys may have tangled the cables somehow. The cables do not look damaged, and I don't want to replace them if I don't have to.

I don't know how old the garage is (house is 60's), nor did I pay attention to it before the springs broke, so I don't know how the cables should be threaded through the pulleys. How should the cable be threaded through the pulleys to let the door move smoothly? Do you know where I might find a diagram? Is there something else that might be preventing the door from closing? There appears to be slack in the cables that go around the pulleys.
Thanks.
