The breaker trips when my central air unit begins to kick on, why? The air unit has only been used 3 seasons, filters are changed monthly, unit was covered for the winter, had a new motor put in my furnace in Sept. that controls the blower, never had this problem before, what's wrong? Am I having a electrical problem and need a electrician or a central air problem and need a heating and cooling person, I don't know who to even call!! Would rather fix it myself, but have no clue!!!!!

to outside unit.Remove access panel.Look at wiring diagram.Does it show an add on for a hard or soft start kit.If it does it will be in dotted lines. If you have low voltage,198 versus 220 you have a problem.I do believe you will need a TECH so he/she can check start components. If your unit does not incorporate them then the hard/soft kit might give you an inexpensive repair.PDF

Assuming that you have a split system, is the breaker that trips the one for the inside fan/Air handler, or is it the one for the outside condensing unit. Typically the breaker labels will be Furnace/AHU/Air Handler (or something similar) and AC/Air Conditioner, respectively.

If it's the one for the inside unit, then I'd first check for a skinned wire on the harness for the new motor. Have the people that did the motor work trouble shoot their work.

If it's the condensing unit, then go with PDF's info.

A thank you to whom tried to help me with my problem, come to find out it was the contacter in the unit that was bad. I had an electrician come and check it out and one of the two contacters was fried, so it was only pulling half the voltage it needed to start, so in turn would trip the breaker. Just for whoevers info........thanks again!!
