I have a Fedders 10,000BTU air conditioner (model LFE-6129/Montgomery Wards). The problem seems to be with the motor fan. When the selector switch is set to "low fan" there is a hum and minimal rotation of the evaporator fan. When set to "high fan" the fan rotation increases but requires a manual rotation to get it to kick in.

However, once the unit kicks in it runs quite adequate. Immediately switching from 'high fan to low fan', the unit works; but if shut off for a specified time period the manual rotation of the evaporator fan is required.

When purchased, I did not receive a manual. Can someone advise me as to what tool is needed to go between the evaporator fan blades to loosen the bolt/nut that is attached to the shaft? It's about 3-4" down between the blades and also how to remove the fans from the motor shaft.

In advance, thank you for your time and support.

Nathan

If the unit is more than 10 yo,it is time to replace it.It is a drawn out process including shifting and moving condenser coil out of the way.If you are lucky blades come off so you can replace motor.Once this is accomplished you will have to pressure wash unit and both coils.Call with model and serial numbers to see if motor is available and what the cost is before you do anything.PDF

I read about shifting coils etc., but have no idea. I'm somewhat handy so I'm sure I'll figure it out. What do you think the cause of the problem is: motor/capacitor? As of now, when I set the swtich to 'high fan' - it may take up to 5 min. before it kicks in. Also is it worth the cost of the repair or buying a warrantied refurb?

Do you know the tool to use to remove the bolt down inside (3-4")the evaporator fan? Thanks

Your motor is history.I have been thru this numerous times. As I stated before model and serial #'s..Once you get a price on replacement motor, your time and energy and labor flip a coin and make your decision.PDF

Hmm point well made. Serviceman said I'd probably need a new motor next year. Anyways.. here goes.. Fedders has motor for $63_$10S&H_+tax. Serviceman says it'll cost me about $150. Other option is Fedders refurb ($250 10k-btu). If I were certain as to how to remove the fans from shaft I'd risk it because I was into the capacitor and know where the leads connect. I don't know what tool to use to reach evaporator nut (down 3-4" between blades.

Appreciate your input. Nathan
