I have what I believe is a weed in my flower garden. It looks almost pine-like, with a large tap root. If I don't pull up the whole root,(which I never seem to be able to do) it grows back. It will grow straight up(if given the space) or it grows side ways like a ground cover. It looks somewhat like a princess pine. I live in zone 5, Massachussets. Does anyone have a clue what it is and how to get rid of it? It is growing up under and around my perenials so I'm afraid to use a herbicide. Please HELP!!!

Spray RoundUp on a cloth or sponge and wipe it on a open wound of the plant (cut the exposed stem off imm prior).
Avoid touching any desirable plants with the RU - it'll kill those as well.
