we have an outer door, fireplace and then a window on our back wall. I want to remove the door and put a like window in its place. The house is 28 yrs. old and we probably can't match the current window. Is it feasible to find a close match and install the new window and replace the old?

Very feasible. Be thankful that you won't be able to match your 28 year old windows! The new ones have to meet current energy standards -- something that didn't exist 28 years ago. Might find a window you like for these 2 spots, then use the same windows to replace the rest of them in the house. The energy savings will pay for the investment in a few years.
