I have a Rheem heat pump (split system, model PCA-18/RCPB-A018) which is about 21 years old, located in Largo FL, 33771. My unit works fine all summer long. However, if I switch the thermostat to heat mode, within minutes I lose all refrigerant. I have used several electronic sniffers, bubble leak detectors, all to no avail. I am unable to find the leak. Any suggestions?

Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

On a blind guess, I'd say there's probably a leak or break in the body of the reversing valve. If it's bad enough, by the time you got the panel off, and tested, your charge would be blown.

For a unit of this age, replacemant of the condensing unit is probably your cost effective move.

I asked rcb2 to send you a thread on 6/5..From his remarks on 6/5 it was a good possibility the RV was the culprit.Yep,you are right a change out of system is the most practical way to go.PDF
