View Full Version : Ceramic base molding questions

I have installed 12x12 tile in the bathroom and now would like to install ceramic base molding. I've decided that it would look better to have the molding grout lines not line up with the grout lines on the floor, and a lot easier too. This leaves smaller pieces in each corner, is that OK? Now I am wondering should I use the same grout as on the floor so they match? Also, should I use the spacers on the molding tiles to determine the grout line size or should I make them a bit bigger, also to coordinate with the floor. If I use the tiles spacers, which make a 1/8" grout line, can I still use the sanded grout I used on the floor so the color matches. This is my first tile job and I think it has turned out well so far. I don't want to mess it up now.

Thanks for the help.

I know it's just a matter of taste, but I like the joints on the tile and baseboard to match up...and yes, use the same adhesive and grout that you used on the floor, to install the baseboards. Just remember that the the joint where the floor and the baseboard come together will probably crack, so use a color matching caulking(or clear) over this joint.

I agree with adanac on everything except the adhesive advice. Normally a thinset is used for the floor tile, whereas on drywall or painted plaster a mastic will give you a better bond.

So you don't think the difference in grout line sizes matter or should I make the molding lines the same size as the floor lines? Also, the grout in the floor contracted as it dried so the grout is not level with the tile. If I add more grout should I damped the original grout lines before regrouting to assist with the bonding of the two.

Appreciate all the help.

It sounds like your baseboard tile is smaller than the floor tile, since you've mentioned the difference in joint size. If the baseboard is a different size, than maybe it would be better to stagger the joints. I'm a little concerned about the "contracted grout joints"...what did you use for adhesive and grout? Do you you have product names and numbers?

The base molding tile is 4x6. So the grout lines don't line up after the first tile without cutting each base tiles. I don't recall the kind of the mortar used for the floor tile. It was purchased at Home Depot. It was a dry mix and was white. I think they only carry one white one. The grout I used is "Tile Perfect, All-In-One Premixed Tile Adhesive and Grout". The container says it is water solvent, some shrinkage may occur and a second coat may be needed. It doesn't indicate wether or not any special prep is needed before applying the second coat. I should also clarify that the grout has not pulled away from the tile. It has just shrunk down into a small valley. Others probably would not even notice. Maybe this is not something I should even be worried about. I just read several things saying the grout should be level with the tiles.

Thanks again for the input.

Ok..that pre-mixed stuff does shrink a lot...the times that I used it I had to grout twice to get the joints full. Sounds like your doing everything right. If the white dry mix is a modified thin set, then it will work just fine for putting on your baseboard.
