The house we're about to buy is stained a very light bluish color. We don't know if it's latex or oil and plan to change the color. I'd prefer to paint. Can we paint over the stain? What steps should we take to prepare the surface (primer, sanding, etc.)?

atrandom, If you are going to paint and don't know the history or what is on it now you really don't have much choice but to lock the house down with exterior oil based primer. This is the very best thing you could do and you can follow this with any top coat you would like. If restaining I would use an oil stain. Unless staining the exact same color use a solid body stain. Stay away from the latex stains that are supposed to be as good as oil.....Mike
