Does it matter that the television plug is disconnected from the wall instead of the tv being turned off by the POWER button on the tv or remote?

I'm asking because my TV plug is connected to the cable box power supply in the back so everytime time I turn the cable box on or off the tv comes on or off.

So it's like the tv is being turned on and off from the wall.

Can I do damage like this?

Thanks.

Good Afternoon, pwtg:

I've never heard of a case where it caused any problems with the television set. A lot of the newer sets, however, will not operate in this fashion. They will come back to a standby mode and wait for the familiar signal from the TV remote.

If your set turns on and off okay with the cable box, it should cause no harm to the set. On the plus side, there is less chance for fires from the TV set due to residual voltages present when the set is plugged in.

However, if it makes you feel more comfortable, turn off the set with the remote and then turn off the cable box. A lot of folks leave the cable box on so that they can record broadcasts when they are away from the set. Either scenario is acceptable.
