I have a RCA vcr model #VR-280 that needs to be repaird and I dont know how to fix it. When I put the tape in and press play nothing happens. I opened it up and looked to see what was happening. The Head spins around and the Little arms put the tape to the head, but nothing turns the tape, is there a belt that needs replaceing?...do you have any suggestions?

Good Afternoon, karlman84:
Very good chance you have lost a drive belt on this unit.
To find the drive belts, you have to open up the other end (bottom) of the unit to find the drive motor and pulleys. Rule of thumb is to replace all the belts at the same time. Also, clean up the rubber pinch rollers in the tape path with a Q-Tip and denatured alcohol (note: NOT RUBBING ALCOHOL...that has oil in it). Do not try to clean the heads with a Q-tip. Best to leave them alone.
Also, depending on the age of the unit, you will find some grease at various points in the linkage. You can clean these up with the same process and regrease them with a little Lubriplate (available at your hardware store).
Where to get the belts? Call around to your local electronics distributors. Often times, they will either have the exact replacement or can find one close enough by meansuring your old belt. And, before you ask, rubber bands are a poor substitute for a good drive belt.
