I have a 1993 JVC 20" color TV. The model
number is C-20CL3. The other night it made
popping sound followed by a variation in the
color. My guess is that one of the circuits
or the gun itself died which drives one of the
colors. I tried to re-adjust the color but
could not get a normal picture back.

I have swapped out modules in a TV before
and gotten it working again. I would like to
try this again.

What modules should I check for this type of
failure? What would the replacement cost (guess) be?

I see new TVs for $200 or so. If the cost is over
$100, it may be time for a new one.

Thanks.

Good Afternoon, Bob:

Loss of one color will usually take you to one of three places: color demodulator, color driver, or picture tube.
Before you go too far, check the neck of the picture tube and see if you have filaments in all three guns.

If you have three filaments glowing, then check the color drivers. There should be one driver for red, blue, and green. The color drivers are driven by color demodulators and, depending on the set, there should be either two or three demodulators.

If you have no color and the picture appears to be green, the circuit of choice is the 3.58 MHz Oscillator.

As to the decision to replace the set, it is best to call around for prices on parts and labor. They vary from area to area so it is difficult to say what will be the exact cost. If it's the picture tube, just play Taps and go shopping.
