I have two towel bars cemented onto the tile in my bathroom. They are composed of two ceramic end pieces which hold a square wooden dowel. My main goal is to replace the wooden piece, but I don't think that I can do so without removing at least on end piece from the wall. Is there a way to remove the towel bar ends without damaging the tile underneath?

no unless you cut the wood bar and install a spring loaded metal bar to replace it :(
