I put down a lot of 12x12 ceramic tiles and the person at the store recommended tec ceramic tile adhesive traditional formula 102 (pre mixed stuff) and after reading the fine print, it says not for use on tiles larger than 8x8. What is the reasoning for that?

When you say "pre-mixed" I think mastic. Won't hold up well. Use a polymer modified thin set. TEC makes Full Flex. Custom's makes Versa Bond.

You were right, John......definitely mastic. The girl at the store where we bought our tile "recommended" it and we called TEC. Major problem........it definitely will not hold the 12x12. The store has agreed to replace the tile and give us the thin set, however, the cement backerboard that we used has mastic all over it now and is damp (wet) from the mastic. They suggested trying to scrape it off, but I see major problems here. Would we be better off ripping up the cement board and having them replace that too. I see no easy way to get it off.
Thanks

If you used a HardiBacker type product that was installed properly the mastic should scrape off fairly easily (much easier than getting up the underlayment anyway).

If you used Wonderboard or one of it's clones (gag), it'll be a bit harder to do, but probably still easier than tearing it all out.

I like John's suggestion of a flex set from any manufacturer, as it will still bond to any mastic that may remain in pores. Particularly if you used mastic in installing the underlayment, (contrary to instructions) as it will be more likely to flex a bit.

If you did use a Wonderboard type product, and the fiberglass screening separated, dump it!
