Flooring Tile - ceramic tile subfloor

Our foyer floor is slab with orange ceramic tile & then vinyl peel & Stick tiles over that. we removed the vinyl tiles and my husband is now smashing up the ceramic. We then plan on putting a self leveling compound down to even out the floor before putting down new ceramic tiles.
Does the self leveling compound work, will that be sufficient under the new ceramic? Also do you need to remove every bit of old mastic or will self leveling compound fill in the gaps? Thanks!!

Hopefully you have thin set mortar under the tile and not mastic....But yes the self leveling compound works...though it's quite expensive. You should knock off as many high spots as possible, so that you don't have to use as much leveler to cover them. If you put one coat of leveler and let it harden, you may find you want to put a second coat, to get the floor as flat as possible.

Maybe rent a small chipping hammer so you won't be too high in relation to any carpet or adjacent flooring. You'll be less likely to suffer from delamination due to potentially 3 different bonding agents and a possibly compromised initial thinset bed as well. You're going through a lot of work and expense, just a little more will improve the appearance and maybe the integrity also.
