I've read that one should remove the commode before laying tile in the bathroom. I guess that's to make layout easier and to reduce the number of cuts. Are there any functional reasons why I (assuming I've got the patience to nibble away at the tile for hours) would not want to trim the tile to fit around the commode and caulk the gaps to seal it?

Like I said, I see how the tiling portion is easier if you remove the commode, but I'm just curious from a functional standpoint if there is any merit to doing it one way vs. the other.

Not really...it's just a million times easier to lay the tile with the toilet out of the way...besides you add an extension ring and a new wax seal and your off to the races, without a 2 inch wide ring of caulking around the base of your toilet. It's a much cleaner look.

I can think of a couple very practical reasons for removing the toilet.

1. They all seem to seep sooner or later and need to be lifted. That's pretty tough to do when the thing is grouted in.

2. Suppose you need to replace the toilet and you can't find one with the same shaped base?

And as Adanac says, it's just a more professional look.
