Can someone explain to me the differences between oil primers and latex primers, and the different reasons for using one over the other? I am going to need to paint a hallway from which I have removed really old wallpaper, which has exposed an even older coat of some kind of yellowed, flaking paint.

mrslpdaley, The latex primers are only good for a situation where no stain killing properties are needed. They are OK on kiln dried lumber that has no sap or other bleeders. If going over wallpaper paste, cigarette residue or any problem surface the latex primers are a waste of time and money. I would strongly suggest an oil primer for your project...Mike
