I live in an older house without a fireplace...thinking about installing a gas unit. What about the ventless types? These sound almost too good to be true...are they safe? How difficult to install? Any helpful hints from the fireplace gods?? Any information would be appreciated.

Hello Cheribaby

In my opinion, the units should not be sold nor used. A little harsh and biased of me granted, considering my background and occupation.

You may want to check the archives for prior postings on this topic before buying a unit. You'll find several postings on this topic along with many various replies.

Next suggestion is to check with the building and safety department within your city or town. In my state these units are not allowed anyhwere indoors. Other states they might be perfectly fine. Codes vary widely.

Are they safe? All depends on ones view point, the condition of the unit, installation methods and the maintenance of the unit. Over the years aspects of each change.

Best advice is to choose wisely by becoming informed and not sold by sales pitches, fancy literature, etc.

Regards & Good Luck

Tom...thank you very much for your opinion. As you could probably tell by my question, I was a little apprehensive myself. My husband just thought it sounded soooooo easy. I wasn't convinced. I already know the answer to the "coding" question, and they are allowed in my state...but that doesn't make them safe, does it? *S* I appreciate your input...I'll call a professional and make sure it's done right...definately don't want to chance it. I'm sure I'll convince my husband that it's the right thing to do...just need a few eyelash battings, pouty lips and puppy dog eyes! *S* Thanks again, have a nice evening.

Hello
Sorry Tom has so much bad about the unit I have used them many time and have had nothing but great results...they come with very detailed directions and if you can follow them you will not have a problem, as with any tool or equipment you need to use it right and do it right for the best job.......They are great hope you reconsider....Good Luck
