Flooring Tile - Re: painting ceramic tiles?

We just purchased a home and the tile color in the bathroom is really too bright for us. I read in a home improvement book that it is possible to paint over ceramic tiles with tile paint instead of removing them all and redoing it. However, when I went to a local home improvement store the sales guy said it doesn't work very well and the paint doesn't last.

Has anyone tried this before?

The bathroom as tile on the walls, in the shower and on the floor.

Thank goodness the home improvement guy gave you the right answer...paint won't last very long on ceramic tile..especially in the bathroom shower..besides..it looks like painted tile...worse than the original colour. Maybe a high gloss epoxy paint, applied buy a professional..but in the long run, it's better to just change the tile.

wow and I thought I had stumbled on a solution to my problem. Is it possible to apply wallpaper over ceramic tile? I bought a home that was built in the mid-late 60's... 1" square ceramic tile in the half bath that is atrocious(browns, cream, white, gold specks). I don't want to go to the trouble of tearing it off and expense of replacing the wallboard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I concur with Adanac and the home improvement guy. Painted tile looks like painted tile (tacky), and it won't hold up.

Sonnie might also address the wallpaper issue. I think you would have to float the area smooth, though, or all the joints will show through.
