My existing kitchen floor is covered in vinyl, can I (is it advisable to) tile directly over the vinyl floor or should I use backer board (or is there some other product that can be used)?

You should have at least 1 1/4 inch of subfloor before you install ceramic tile. Pull out a heat register and measure the subfloor...if it's less, use cement backer board. If you floor is on cement slab, then taking out the vinyl is the best way to go...use modified thin set as adhesive(either way)

Whatever the case, don't tile directly to the vinyl.
