While my Sony T.V. was on, the screen went blank and
the red Stand-By/Timer light began flashing. I get
no sound and no picture. I looked at the Sony Web Site
and it said to unplug the set for 3 hours
and the set should reset itself. I've gone through this
evolution twice with the same outcome. As soon as I
plug it in, it powers up (without me turning it on),
the light flashes, and I get no sound or picture.
I purchased the set 3 years ago and have had no problems
with it. Help!
UPDATE: I let the T.V. sit overnight, plugged it in
again...and still get the same results. I called the
Sony Help Line who basically told me the same thing
that the web site had indicated. She said all she
does it type in the question and her database gives
her the response. Nice enough gal, but not a tech.
She gave me numbers of authorized service techs in my
area in addition to the address of the closest Sony
Service Center. Again....any other suggestions?

Good afternoon, mack33:

I did a web search looking for similar problems in the Sony receivers and came up dry. Using the same methods you did, I got a similar answer. This is eerie!

Did you have a lightning storm recently? What I suspect is that a surge on the power line snuffed the control chip. I assume this TV has a menu that allows you to use this set as an "alarm clock". You can program it to turn on or shut off at a prescribed time. It sounds like it is locked in the "go to sleep" mode. If it will not reset to default settings after a prolonged off (or unplugged) time. It is time to take the back off the set and let a tech do some serious troubleshooting. This is more detailed than we can produce on this site.

This set is a basic computer in its own right and suffers much like any computer when power surges show up. Do you have surge protection on the unit?

And, I appreciate the input on Sony's support system. While it may appear to be inadequate, not many manufacturers will even off you that sort of support.

Smokey,
I appreciate your response and insight! No, no recent
lightning storms and, yes, I do have surge protection.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not,
but about the same time the set went out, there was
a Motorola 1 mile range walkie talkie sitting on top
of the set. This is the only thing I can even remotely
come up with.

It's just frustrating to spend so much for a reputable
unit only 3 years ago. I have an old Sears LXI 19 in.
set that's well over 11 years old with no problems.

Thanks again....looks like I'm at the mercy of the
maytag repair man's fees! Mack
