Hi all, I have a JVC TV that is only four years old and is causing some issues. Just today out of the blue it has started flickering while watching a show. the picture will have little flickers of color appear and sometimes the picture will blurr just a tad. when this happens there is a sparking noise coming from the back. on top of that there is a smell coming from the back as well. it is going out or can i have it serviced and save it? help i am missing the playoffs.

Good Morning, garciaa:

The problem you describe sounds like it is centered in the high voltage section of the set. The set develops about 40,000 volts to make the picture tube light up. A portion of the high voltage is used to focus the picture. So, there is a fluctuation in this voltage that is not supposed to be there.

Without actually seeing or experiencing the problem, it is difficult to ascertain the exact location of the problem. If there is a high voltage "leak", you would smell something akin to burning ozone. If a circuit component is overheating, the smell is more burning oil or wood.

Either way, it is time to get the back off the set and have a look inside. Dealing with the high voltage requires some expertise and not something I would pass to the owner. So, let's think about calling the shop.

Again, it can be something simple or it could serious. I can tell without being there. In any case, too many fires start in the home as a result of these kind of failures and I caution you to not use the set until the problem is resolved.
