i'm wondering if anyone had any "formulas" that could be forwarded to me so that i could correctly measure floors?

Length x width=floor area. Measure complicated areas into smaller squares or rectangles, and then add them together.

I think you are talking about coming up with the correct amount of footage. It's not hard. Divide the floor into rectangles, depending on the room's layout. Measure the length and width of each rectangle and multiply the two. When you've finished, add the products together to arrive at a total.
I round things out when I'm measuring. If the length of a rectangle is 9 ft. 7 in., it becomes 10 ft., for example. 12 ft. 3 in. is simply 12 ft. It all averages out.
In a kitchen/breakfast area that comes to around 300 feet, I'll add about 25 to 30 ft. for waste and spares. On a larger project, say, 1000 ft. or so, I'll usually have 50 square feet of material extra.
