I have a phillips-magnovox 46inch projection tv. I recently put a new convergence board in it , but I still need to set the convergence . I know that this is done with a grid and the remote control , but I do not know the code that you push on the remote to bring this up. Can anyone tell me the how to bring this up on the remote , and perhaps any tips on setting the convergence . I have a general idea on how it is done , but any tips may be helpful .....thanks

Good Evening, Jim:

My curiosity is killing me. Why did you changed the convergence board? What led to this situation?

If you are going to try to do a shotgun convergence on this set, you are in for a rocky road. Convergence adjustments interact with one another and there is a set sequence of adjustments. If you get them out of sequence, you end up with a worse picture than before. In short, it is time consuming and difficult.

My advice is to pick up a service manual on this machine and follow the information that it provides. It should clue you into the using the remote control to access the dot-bar generator in the electronics and the sequence of the adjustments.

I would talk to Union Electronics about getting this manual.
They provide both parts and literature on most of the sets.
You can access their website at http://www.unionel.com/

Smokey ,
When my tv first messed up I had a moonlighting repairman come and look at the set . He told me that the convergence board was bad . He said that a new board was about $500.00.
I found a board for $100.00 he told me how to put it in , and that the convergence would still need to be set after the new board was installed . However , he did not tell me how to access the code . He was supposed to come back and set it but did not . He was a little leary that he may get in toouble for moonlighting , I think that is why he was a no show . I already bought one book on projection tv repair but it did not tell me what I wanted to know . I feel confidant that I can fix it with the code , I hate to spend another $35-40 for the code if someone can tell me . I watched him adjust the convergence the first time he looked at it trying to improve the picture , so I have a general idea how it is done . Maybe that will cure your curosity..
Thanks Jim

HERE IS A DIRECT LINE TO PHILLIPS MAGNAVOX SERVICE AND ORDER DEPT

I -800-851-8885 OR I 800 292 6066

They may be able to provide the code you are looking for.

convergence can take a fair amount of time and you must be convendent and know what you are doing. You repairman should have had a test pattern generator with him , which he apparently did not, as not all tv's have a convergence pattern generator built in.

I have done convergence before but it is not a quick job, and don't do it without the proper test pattern, I didn't have a test generator, but since I did work at a broadcast station, I was able transmit a proper test pattern when the station was signed off in the middle of the night.

If your repairman was worried about getting into trouble , why did he start the job ?

As smokey says a service manual explaining the procedure would be of great benefit to you.
