i have pine wood floors that have never been sanded or finished how do i put my tile on top of these they are not level can i use mortar to level and fill in cracks and then put tile down or do i pull them up i believe they would make a good sub floor

We just completed a job here at the marina where we have wood subflooring and we wanted tile so we put down this material called Dura-rock. it is a board that is covered with a thin motar..screwed it right to the subfoor, spread the adhesive, set the tile, grouted them in. Worked like a dream. All the tenants were pleased by the new upgrade fom a shabby wood floor covered with linoleum to updated tile.

Yes, at the minimum you'll need the "Durock," which is one brand of cement backer board or CBU. Other brands are Wonder Board, Hardi-backer, and Perma Base.

when using durarock or other like materials please make sure you let it go under the wall boards all the way to the studs a rotozip saw will accomplish this easily. This will keep water from seeping into this area.

thank you for all of your advice, we ended up pulling up wood floor and putting wonder board down, doing the work ourselves and with both of us working 10+ hours a day no telling how long this will take but i'm sure it will be worth it in the end again thanks michele
