Our picture has been reduced to a single line across the middle of the set. Is the tube shot or can this be reparied?

Good Afternoon, Brian J:

Since you did not enlighten us as to the make, model, or year of the set, I am going to speak in general terms.

You have a condition called "vertical collapse". Any one of the circuits involved could be the vertical oscillator, the vertical driver, or the vertical deflection yoke on the neck of the picture tube.

Can it be repaired? Certainly. But, stop by your bank and take out a loan first. The problem is normally a failure of the vertical driver amplifier. While the cost of the transistor is relatively inexpensive, the labor costs drive this up in the the $300 catagory. If you want to spend that kind of $$$ on the set, that is your decision.

For the plus side, it has nothing to do with the picture tube.

I don't know what part of the country you live in Smokey.
I am on the east coast and have been repairing these problems for much less than that for regular direct view TVs
It seems to me your estimate is way too high and would discourage people from going ahead with the repair.

Hey Smokey,
I actually have the same problem. My make / model is a 27" Fischer, model # PC2525 and its about 8 years old. Does this help with any the high price to repair? Or is it still cheeper to buy a new one?

Thanks,
Joe K.

Technician prices vary from area to area and I should stress that it is prudent to get estimates before getting repairs. In the New Jersey/New York area for example, the going rate for technician time runs from $95-$125 a hour. In my current location in the Southern U.S., the technician rates range around $60 an hour.

The biggest problem facing the average folks these days is finding someone to work on the electronics. The old days of the corner TV Repair Shop have all but disappeared. Most of the old techs gave up when televisions went to solid state. They couldn't comprehend the technology.

As such, what is left is factory repair sites or factory service centers. This allows them to specialize in specific brands of electronics. Such sites, however, require technicians to have specific levels of training which reproduces itself as higher costs to the customer
but better quality service.

So, what you are quoting may be accurate for your area. When I give an estimate on this site, it is based on "worst
case" and will be high. It is better that our customers get a "better deal" and get it done for less. They feel much better about life. If they get it done and it is twice my estimate, then they form hate groups about Smokey.

And, that's the way it is, folks.

Only just my 2 cents worth...

Todays society is not as it used to be, I think in a lot of respects it has become a throw away scoiety. For example why even think about a vcr repair when you can replace the unit starting at under $ 100. I think in a lot of respects tv's are the same. It is not usually the parts that kills you, but the labour costs. I think the 50 % idea is valid, if the repairs approaches 50 % or more of replacement than I would usually recommend replacing the item. It is often a personal choice, if it has a sentimental attachment to the unit then for that reason alone you may want to have it repaired even though it may not be logial.

Some places may provide a free esstimate on repair than you decide from there, other places charge to even look at it and provide an estimate. I think the great thing about this site is that the poster can get experienced information so that the person can make an informed decision on how to or to not proceed. You may also be in a much better position when calling around to various repair facilities as you now have a good idea at what is at fault and therefore giving the repair place a better idea of what it may cost.
