View Full Version : Refinish deck chairs

I have 2 "Redwood?" deck chairs that have been weathered pretty badly and I remember when I bought them years ago that I was told to use Tung Oil on them to keep them looking new. WELL, I haven't done that and now they are faded and need refinished. How should I go about refinishing them? Should I just clean them and put tung oil on them or what?

TIA,
Chris

Chris,
Your chairs can be freshened up a bit with a pressure washer(not too close as to damage the wood) or a standard deck cleaner solution. Pure tung oil will give some protection, however, many tung oils sold also contain some olyurethane, and you do not want to use a poly. I have tried marine spar urethane, but in two years of sun, it will peel. After cleaning the chairs you could use a combination deck stain/water repellent in the transparent color of your choice.
Redwood, Cypress, and Cedar(all rot resistant) are the three primary woods used for outdoor furniture. They all weather to an attractive silvery grey with time. Thus, the other option is to leave them alone.
