I have an unfinished pine shelf it first and then paint it and wipe the paint off of the corners and edges to give it a antiquish look. I think that I have seen this thechnique done but am not sure what it is called and/or exactly how to do it. What kind of stain do you use? I assume that you need to use a semi-gloss paint, is this correct? Also, do I apply the paint with a sponge brush and then wipe the edges with a clean rag? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Not sure of exactly the look you're after, but you can use almost any stain that gives you the base color you're after.
Oil or latex paint can be used for the 'accent'. I would suggest latex because 'mistakes' can be easily removed before they dry in.
You might want to consider a the of 'pastel' stains by Minwax. As a second coat, I believe they'd come very close to the look you're after.
