I have an unfinished butcher block top that I would like to stain possibly and protect. The Tung OIl canisters that I have been looking at have Toxic warnings on them so am wondering how that will work on this area where food will be prepared.
I welcome expert advice as I am novice and am looking for somethng that is long lasting and health friendly.

Karl:
I would suggest what's called a 'salad bowl' finish - it's available from many home centers and hobby stores. As it's name implies, it's designed for wooden bowls that will contain foodstuffs.
It's not the most durable finish in the world, but it should serve your purpose.
If you can't find it locally, try either of the two sites listed below.
