I have inherited a coffee table that has a veneer top with a high gloss finish. I noted the table has light scratches all over the top (they are not deep) and some areas that seem dull compared to the rest of the table. I don't want to have to refinish it, it if possible, but I do want to remove the scratches and the dull spots. There are no water stains or dents that I've noted. The table is a red mahogany color. Is there anyway to save it without having to refinish it?

If the scratches are deep enough to catch your fingernail this method won't work, but otherwise, buy a can of automotive polishing compound such as Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover. Apply according to directions. Several applications may be necessary.

It's a lot of elbow grease, but I've used this method for years to rejuvenate dining room table tops with just ordinary 'wear marks' made from sliding china and silverware around.

If the scratches are too deep for this method, the top will have to be refinished - not stripped, just recoated with lacquer.
