View Full Version : Repainting bedroom set

I'm planning to refinish a bedroom set that is approx. 18 years old, but I am unsure as to how I should proceed..... The wood is painted, and I'm not sure exactly what lies under the paint - I suspect it's veneer. The pieces are in good shape - there aren't any dings, etc. to repair, only the paint is old & faded (not to mention just plain ugly!). My aspiration is to apply a fresh coat of more attractive paint, but I don't know if I can get away with just cleaning, sanding, then repainting, or if I need to completely strip the wood and start from scratch. Any insight will be infinitely appreciated!!! :-)

Blondi:

Good news - you don't have to strip the pieces in order to paint.

Scuf sand the pieces thoroughly - this is sanding to remove all of the sheen - make it dull all over. If there are in drips, runs, sags, etc. in the existing finish - sand them flat.

Apply 2 coats of a good primer - I suggest either BIN or KILZ, sanding lightly after each has dried to remove any irregularities. Wipe clean (a damp rag works well) to remove sanding debris and paint away. Either oil base paint or Acrylic Latex will work over either of these primers and should prove durable enough for furniture.
