Dear Comrades:(remember get smart)

I recently acquired a RCA RV9970A home theatre system
at what I considered a bargain price. The rear speakers
work but I could bearly hear them and the audio sounds
distorted. It is not the speakers I checked those.
Should I weep now. Is this a major problem, or something I can fix. I have some technical skills. Something like this should not happen to me but it did. Everything else work fine.

Good Morning, nalcue:

I would imagine the sound problem was a contributing factor to the "very good price" aspect.

I haven't been able to gleen much information on this unit so I am running "blind" as it were. What is the age of the set?

Considering the design of these units, weak sound on the rear speakers would make me believe there is an amplifier problem in the system. Since most of these amplfiers uses a push-pull design, it would appear that there is a driver transistor failure in the unit.

If the picture is good, an audio amplifier repair is not too expensive to consider. Getting the back speakers up and running again will improve the quality of the presentation.

If you have some electronic expertise, the first plan of action is to get a repair manual and some diagrams on the set. To that end, I would suggest you contact Union Electronics Distributors on the web giving them model, serial number, etc. They are pretty good about coming up with the needed parts and manuals on most of these sets.
You can find them at http://www.unionel.com/

RCA, incidentally, is no longer RCA. The parent company these days is Thompson Electronics, an off shore entity who trades using (what was) a good brand name. I can't speak for the quality of the unit.
