Hitachi 27" model #27AX3B (1994). Screen produces black horizontal lines. Lately, screen goes black except for the image in a horizontal line about 3-4" in height. Turning the set on & off sometimes returns the screen to normal--sometimes not. Pleaz help...didn't think I'd have to replace the set so soon...

Good Morning, mmc134:

To be more precise, the picture has collapsed vertically and when speaking to the technicians about the problem, just refer to it as "Vertical Collapse". They will know instantly what the problem is.

The actual failure can be traced to any one of three areas:
The vertical oscillator, the vertical driver, or the vertical deflection yoke on the neck of the picture tube.
Since the picture is 3-4" inches high, the most likely candidate is the vertical driver circuit. Since the picture has not collapsed totally, I would not suspect the vertical driver, itself, but would look to a component in the circuit. In this case, I would be looking for a filter capacitor or a bad height control. It could well be nothing more than a bad solder connection. Hitachi is famous for bad connections.

Either way, the set has to be sent to the shop or have one of your friends with electronic expertise have a look at it.
The components are not expensive but labor costs are out of sight. If the picture on the screen is still good, then the set is worth this repair.

Hi Smokey-
I see you answering the different threads...and was hoping you were out there for me. Thanks I will have someone look at it. In your opinion...would it be just as expensive to replace this set...
Thanks again! mmc134

Good Morning, mmc134:

I appreciate your confidence. Replacing the set is largely your decision. True, the set is seven years old and that is something to consider. But, this failure is minor in nature and would be, to me, worth the look and get an estimate. If the picture was good on the screen, then there is a good change for another four or five years of life out of the old box.

And, too, the industry is getting ready to make the big shift to HDTV and in those years ahead, you will be faced with having to replace the old box anyway. The old set will not work with HDTV and you will have to replace it or not watch television.

Conversely, if you want to make the shift now, then it is wise to purchase a set that is HDTV compatible. They are on the market as you read this. They are a bit pricey, of course, but essentially a MUST if you make the plunge. If you feel more confident to place your money in a new set instead of the repairing the old one, you have these things to consider.
